Well, this is big news!
On Friday, CommonWealth Kitchen – the non-profit food-business incubator announced it has purchased the 36,000-square-foot building located at 196 Quincy St. for $7 million!
According to the Boston Business Journal, CommonWealth receiving city and state financing including $5.7 million from the city of Boston and $2.5 million from the state money via MassDevelopment, with a portion of that a forgivable loan.
CommonWealth Kitchen has been operating in the Quincy Street building since 2014 and has helped many local small businesses including one our favorite Dorchester woman owned businesses – Top Shelf Cookies, in addition to Food Fresh Generation. Also the soon to open Comfort Kitchen will host events and appearances from local chefs and entrepreneurs through a partnership with CommonWealth Kitchen.
Currently, the nonprofit has about 50 small-businesses operating in the shared kitchen and the organization helps with everything from permitting to menu design. CommonWealth also plans to spend $4 million to improve, expand and reorganize the building. So good things are in store!
