Coming Soon

An old historic comfort station on Columbia Road will transform into a cafe serving comfort food from around around the world. Initially, Comfort Kitchen hoped to open in the summer of 2020 but thanks to delays the date was pushed out. But recently, a new opening date was revealed to the Dorchester Reporter. The goal for opening is now the summer of 2022!

The comfort station – which was built in 1912 – had also been planned to be converted into a coffee shop and bike shop. But this newest venture is the only plan coming to fruition.

Historic Boston Inc – a nonprofit that helps with costs of older historic buildings to redesign the property – is currently helping with the renovations and transformation of the 1200 square foot space and will eventually transfer ownership to Comfort Kitchen – five years after the restaurant is open for business.

Once renovations are complete, Biplaw Rai, Nyacko Pearl Perry, Kwasi Kwaa, and Rita Ferreira will open the restaurant which will be open for café and lunch service in the morning until early afternoon, then close to prepare for dinner service.

According to Boston Eater, Comfort Kitchen will host events and appearances from local chefs and entrepreneurs through a partnership with Commonwealth Kitchen.  Comfort Kitchen was also named one of the Best Pop Ups in 2021 by Boston Eater for their residency at Little Dipper in JP – serving a menu inspired by the connections between Caribbean and South Asian cuisines thanks to the spice trade.

“The Comfort Kitchen team has actually been popping up around town extensively since early 2020, introducing eager diners to its global comfort food, meant to celebrate the flavors and ingredients of the African diaspora, touching cuisines from Asia to the Americas.”

One of the future goals of the Comfort Kitchen will be to serve food that reflects the diverse neighborhood of Uphams Corner.  We can’t wait

History of the Comfort Station via HBI:

The Comfort Station is a one-story stucco and tile “mission style” building was built as a convenience station in 1912 to support the expanding streetcar system in Boston. It was designed by Dorchester architect William H. Besarick, who also designed the nearby municipal building at the corner of Columbia Road and Bird Street, as well as many triple-decker residences in the area.

The Comfort Station lies on what was once part of the Dorchester North Burying Ground, which is listed in the State and National Register of Historic Places and within the cemetery’s Boston Landmark designation.
