Dot Gets a Sip of the Action

The Boston Licensing Board has given the green light to 21 more neighborhood-restricted liquor licenses, bringing the total to 58, up from the 37 it approved earlier this year. That’s good news for local spots in areas like Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury, where these licenses are intended to support small businesses and provide residents with more local dining and drinking options.

These new licenses are part of a larger package of 225, granted by the state legislature, with 195 specifically targeted to zip codes that have historically been overlooked when it comes to liquor licenses. Translation: you won’t see these popping up in the Seaport, Back Bay, or Downtown.

Instead, places in Dorchester and other designated neighborhoods get a shot at serving beer, wine, or the hard stuff—without the six-figure price tag that normally comes with buying a license. The catch? These licenses can’t be resold, and they must go back to the city if the business shuts down.

More are on the way, too—the board still has to hold hearings on other applications submitted before the May 23 deadline, and another round of licenses is expected to be up for grabs later this year. Cheers to that!
