The City of Boston is moving ahead with plans to expand the Bluebikes network, adding 21 new stations across Charlestown, East Boston, South Boston, and the South Boston Waterfront. This follows a public engagement process that gathered over 900 comments via open houses, emails, and surveys in October and November.
Last fall, the city identified 56 potential sites for new stations in these neighborhoods and asked for community input to narrow down the list. Based on that feedback, priority locations have been selected, and installation is set to begin next week, pending permits.
Here are some of the planned locations:
South Boston and Waterfront:
- Summer St at A St
- Harbor St at Channel St
- O’Callaghan Way at Kemp St (off-street on BHA property)
- Boston Convention and Exhibition Center – 16 additional docks at the existing station
Charlestown:
- Main St at Mishawum St
- Chelsea St at Medford St
- Medford St at McNulty Ct
- Constitution Rd at Chelsea St
- Main St at Salem St
- Main St at Devens St
East Boston:
- Ashley St at Boardman St
- Bennington St at Marion St
- Wood Island T Stop – Vienna St at Bennington St
Some existing stations are also being expanded or reconfigured. For example, the Broadway T Stop station will gain eight additional docks. Two new stations are being added as part of development-related requirements at Congress St at Boston Wharf Rd in the South Boston Waterfront and Rutherford Ave at Bunker Hill Industrial Park in Charlestown.
The city has also entered into an agreement with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to install new stations in parks and parkways, including locations such as Pope John Paul II Park in Dorchester, Christian A. Herter Park in Allston, Jamaicaway at Perkins St in Jamaica Plain, and Truman Parkway at Fairmount Ave in Hyde Park.
