Big changes could be coming to a well-known stretch of Dorchester Avenue. The owners of James A. Murphy & Son Funeral Home—a longtime family-run business at 1020 Dorchester Ave. near Belfort Street—have officially filed plans to build a new 22-unit residential building on what’s currently their parking lot.
Thomas and Julie Murphy, the owners behind the proposal, submitted plans to the Boston Planning & Development Agency detailing a four-story building that would include ground-floor commercial space, making room for new housing and potential small business opportunities right in the heart of Dot.
Out of the 22 apartments, four would be designated as affordable housing. The project also includes an underground garage with 12 parking spots, indoor storage for 14 bicycles, and room for 12 more bikes outdoors—a nod to the growing number of neighbors choosing to get around on two wheels instead of four.
The location is prime for commuters: just a short walk to both the Savin Hill and JFK/UMass Red Line stations.
The proposed project would sit at 1028–1032 Dorchester Ave., adjacent to the funeral home. Community members will have a chance to weigh in during upcoming public meetings as part of the city’s review process. Stay tuned for updates on hearing dates and how to submit your feedback.
