A 9-alarm fire swept through a Mattapan neighborhood destroying eight homes on Saturday afternoon.  The fire began at about 4:45 p.m. at 39 Old Morton St. which was a vacant house under construction.  Thanks to high winds, the blaze quickly jumped to seven more houses.

Over 100 Boston firefighters responded to the fire. 9 injuries reported including 7 firefighter.  BPD estimates damages will amount to a multimillion-dollar loss.

The Gallivan Community Center at 61 Woodruff Way was opened as shelter for those impacted by the fire, officials said. The American Red Cross is assisting those who were displaced.

BFD is still on scene ensuring that all hot spots are out.  Fire investigators are working to determine cause and point of origin of fire.
