Congratulations Engine 18 and Ladder 6 at Peabody Sq! For the past 150 years, they have been keeping the residents of Dorchester and beyond safe!
Did you know?
Back in 1910, the Boston fire department purchased its first motorized apparatus. From 1914 until 1923, horse drawn engines as well as steam and motorized engine companies were in use in Boston.
Dalmatians and horses are very compatible! Dalmatians were trained to run in front of the horse drawn engines to help clear a path and quickly guide the horses and firefighters to the fires.
In 1923, Ladder 24 (on Cambridge Street) was the last company to replace its horses with engines. In 1925, the last of the fire horses were retired.
