Friday Night Tennis

If the official start of the Australian Open has you itching to hit the court, check out Friday night tennis at Sportsmen’s Tennis and Enrichment Center in Dorchester. Adults 21+ are invited to join for mixed doubles from 8pm to 10pm on Friday evenings. Registration is $18 per player and spots are limited, so call ahead to confirm and save your spot.

MLK Celebration

The City of Boston + Boston University will present “A Day of Celebration in Honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr” on Monday, January 15, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at Metcalf Hall on the second floor of the George Sherman Union at Boston University!  It will be broadcasted live. Educators Networking Event

The Teacher’s Lounge, a nonprofit dedicated to diversifying Boston’s educational workforce, is hosting a free networking event on Friday evening. “Last Period” will take place at District 7 Tavern from 5pm to 8pm and will feature free food, beverages, games and plenty of mingling. 

Vision Board Workshop

Open Doors Yoga in Dorchester invites you to participate in a workshop designed to use mindfulness tools to inspire motivation and set goals for the new year and beyond. The event takes place on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm and includes a simple flow yoga class, vision board materials and light refreshments. $35 advance registration is required. 

Decluttering Workshop

If part of your New Year’s resolution was to get organized, look no further than this workshop hosted by the Time of Butterflies this Saturday at the Black Box Theater in Codman Square. Stop in from 1pm to 3pm to learn the basics of organization and decluttering, as well as how to cope with stress and create a convenient system to maintain results.

Dorchester Walking Tour

Join Four Corners Main Streets and BostonCares on a Neighborhood Walking Tour of Dorchester this Saturday from 12pm to 2pm. In celebration of MLK Day, this walking tour will focus on civic engagement, including supporting small businesses, particularly those that are BIPOC and immigrant-owned. The neighborhood tour will visit local stops where guests can learn the history of the community and enjoy food samples along the way.

Inclusive Ice Skating

Dorchester’s DCR Devine Memorial Rink will host athletes of all abilities for an inclusive ice skating event on Saturday from 5pm to 7pm. The event seeks to raise funds for Play Brigade, a nonprofit dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities in fitness, play, recreation and sports.

Celtic Music Festival

The 21st annual Boston Celtic Music Festival, or BCMFest, returns to Cambridge this weekend with an exciting lineup of traditional Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, Quebecois and other Celtic music, song and dance. The event kicked off with a sold-out show on Thursday evening and continues with multiple performances throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday at various locations in Davis Square. Free Museum Admissions on MLK Day

The Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art are just a few of the cultural institutions offering free admission and special programming this weekend in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For those open to a trip to the North Shore, Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum will also offer free acrylic pour art workshops hosted by Dorchester native and artist Rahim Gray on Monday afternoon. 

Boston Children’s Chorus Martin Luther King, Jr Tribute Concert

Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) is thrilled to announce the organization’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert, “In The Name Of Love,” which will take place at Boston’s Symphony Hall at 4:00pm on Monday, January 15th. The concert will highlight movements for equality across marginalized communities throughout American history, centering powerful stories from the LGBTQIA+ community and more!  Get the details here.

Get Moving

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC), has announced the launch of the 2024 Boston Parks Winter Fitness Series. This program is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and offers free virtual classes from January 7 through April 6 including Afrobeats Dance, Cardio Kickboxing, Chair Yoga, Dance Fit, Strength and Balance, Strength and Conditioning, Yoga, and Zumba.
