In local First Suffolk District Senate news, Suffolk County Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins has endorsed state Rep. Nick Collins.  A special election will be help on Tuesday, April 3rd.

See press release below:

“For the past eight years, while serving as the State Representative of the 4th Suffolk District, Nick Collins has been passionately committed to providing his constituents with access to quality education, housing that is truly affordable, fair wages and good jobs,” said Sheriff Tompkins. “Representative Collins has also worked to expand addiction recovery services and criminal justice reform, including the elimination of mandatory minimums for non-violent first-time drug offenders. As the Sheriff of Suffolk County, I am keenly aware of the powerful role that each of these play in not only the public health and safety of our communities, but in our efforts to stem the tide of incarceration and reduce recidivism. It is for these reasons that I am proudly supporting his efforts to represent the State Senate’s First Suffolk District.”

Sheriff Tompkins has worked for the Suffolk Sheriff’s department since 2002. He was first appointed sheriff in 2013 and was elected in 2014. Collins has worked with the sheriff on a variety of initiatives over the past several years, including criminal justice reform, job training, reentry and recidivism reduction efforts.

“I’m grateful for the support of Sheriff Tompkins,” Collins said. “He’s a consummate professional who has helped make Boston’s neighborhoods safer by improving inmate education, increasing mental health and addiction treatment and creating a model reentry program to help inmates find pathways to success upon release.”
