New Proposal Would Extend the Orange Line to Mattapan – Wouldn’t that be nice!

Could the Orange Line one day run to Mattapan? Maybe!
According to Universal Hub, Boston City Councilors Brian Worrell and Miniard Culpepper are proposing an extension of the Orange Line from Ruggles to Mattapan Square via a new tunnel under Warren Street and Blue Hill Avenue.
The councilors say the project would bring much-needed rapid transit service to neighborhoods that have long been overlooked when it comes to transportation investments. According to the councilors, neighborhoods along the Blue Hill Avenue corridor have been overlooked for decades. After the Orange Line was rerouted in the 1980s, residents were promised improved rail service, but instead received bus service that many say doesn’t meet the community’s needs. They also argue that cost concerns should not prevent the MBTA from studying the proposal.
At this point, the idea is still in the proposal stage, with no timeline or cost estimate attached.
