A meeting will be held on Monday night at 5:30pm at the Dever School auditorium to discuss a new $30 million indoor sports and community center on Mt. Vernon Street on Columbia Point.
Over the summer, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester and the Martin W. Richard Foundation submitted a plan for the new facility to the Boston Public Schools. The facility would potentially be taking over the playing fields of the John W. McCormack School and it is not without controversy. Family of the McCormack School believe they were kept in the dark about the plans to take over the land and turn it over to the new facility.
The Boys and Girls Clubs proposal does says the new facility would be open to students during school hours and to Boys and Girls Clubs members during non-school hours.
The McCormack school community, in addition to the Dever School, and Boston Community Leadership Academy – which will merge with the McCormack to form a new 7–12 secondary school in the McCormack building – have all been invited to attend this meeting. Members of the Harbor Point Community Task Force also expected to attend.
