On Wednesday, Mayor Michelle Wu said that the city will pause the removal of people living in tents at Mass + Cass while an ACLU lawsuit challenging the process is pending.
According to the Boston Globe, Wu made remarks at a morning briefing outside City Hall. The ACLU will argue at Suffolk Superior Court that removals are unconstitutional and violate rights of those being displace.
Wu stated that while the city is in court, the removal of tents will hit the pause button pending the outcome of the the legal process. The city and the ACLU will go before a judge to see whether to grant a temporary restraining order against the city.
The complaint against the city states shelters are not viable options for many people living at the encampment for a host of reasons ranging from drug and alcohol use to medical and family needs.
Wu said the evictions would “not necessarily” continue even if the judge rules against the ACLU.
Back in October, Acting Mayor Kim Janey declared the area of Mass + Cass a public health crisis and ordered the removal of tents and encampments.
