Don’t let the “Members Only” sign deter you. The Polish American Citizens Club on Boston Street is a hidden neighborhood gem that needs to be experienced. Located in the Polish Triangle, the Polish American Citizens Club (or the PC as it affectionately know by the regulars) has been a fixture in the Dorchester community since the 1930s and this social club will quickly become a place where “everybody knows your name.”

The downstairs bar has been recently renovated giving the bar a more modern feel, while retaining its vintage, dive bar vibe. The bright white walls are adorned with artwork curated by the Gallery Event in Dorchester and the warm gray floors and Globe edison lights above the bar subtly updated the look. But don’t expect fancy, high-priced cocktails at the PC. What you will find is a full bar, a great variety of Polish beers (handy pronunciation guide below), and serious value for your hard-earned money. $20 will keep you well hydrated for a night at the PC.

The upstairs hall is used for private functions as well as PC-organized events like an annual Halloween Party, comedy shows, dances, and cultural events. Unfortunately, there is no kitchen, however, patrons can order food from any number of local spots to enjoy at the bar. (Andrew Square House of Pizza and DJ’s Market & Deli are a couple of favorites.)

And one of the best parts – you don’t need to be Polish to join the Polish Club. You can join as a Regular member (open to those of Polish descent who were born in Poland or have Polish-born parents or grandparents) or as an Associate member if you aren’t Polish. Dues are only $30 annually, and since all new members need to be sponsored by a current Club member in good standing, attending club events or mingling at the downstairs bar is a great way to get to know people.

So next time you’re in the neighborhood or looking for some place chill to hang out with friends, stop in for a piwo or check out one of the PC’s upcoming events to experience one of Dorchester’s hidden neighborhood gem.

The Polish American Citizens Club is located at 82 Boston Street. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 2pm to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 1pm to 12am; Sunday 12pm to 10pm.
