Neighborhood Spotlight

If you’ve spent any time in Adams Village, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Catherine Guerard. Maybe it was over a cup of tea from Greenhills, or while corralling a group of kids post-hockey practice at Garvey. She’s a familiar face, a friendly neighbor, and someone who’s made it her mission to support the people who support us—first responders and their families.

Catherine is the Vice President of Member Service at Boston Firefighters Credit Union, and she’s been part of the BFCU family for nearly 20 years. Her role isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. “My favorite part of what I do is working with first responders and their families,” she shares. “These are the people who show up for us on our worst days, and I get to be part of a team that shows up for them when it comes to their financial needs—whether it’s buying their first car, getting through a tough time, or just simplifying day-to-day banking. I love knowing I can make a small difference for those who make such a big difference in our lives.”

Born and raised in Dorchester (38 years and counting!), Catherine and her husband Eddie—a Local 103 electrician—are raising their family right in the same neighborhood that raised them. Their kids, Deirdre (7), Colin (5), and Logan (almost 3), will all be heading to SJP Neponset next year—just like Eddie did back in the day.

Weekends in the Guerard household revolve around sports, playgrounds, and family. “Depending on the season, we’re either at Garvey or Toohig Park,” Catherine says. “Our kids love playing, but honestly, it’s just as much about the time after the games—running around the park, impromptu playdates, and catching up with friends we grew up with who are now raising their own families.”

After the games, it’s often a walk to her parents’ or in-laws’ house nearby so the kids can burn off even more energy with their cousins. And when it’s time to eat? “There are so many great restaurants in Adams Corner,” she says. “We love being able to walk to all of them, but you’ll almost always find us at Landmark on Family Fridays.”

Despite her busy schedule, Catherine always finds time for a little neighborhood routine. “I love grabbing a tea from Greenhills in the morning—usually run into one of my dad’s friends!—or stopping by Mud House for an iced coffee before a walk.”

Catherine often bumps into people she’s helped through work while out and about in the neighborhood. “Some of them I grew up with, some are new to the area, and some are surprised to see me outside of work. There are people who introduce me to their families, and others who give a simple head nod — a quiet but meaningful thank you. The work we do through BFCU is genuine, and being able to see firsthand how it positively impacts people in the community is what makes it all worth it.”

For Catherine, being part of the community isn’t just about where you live—it’s about how you show up.

“It’s so important for people to be involved because it builds connection, safety, and a real sense of belonging,” she says. “When people show up — whether it’s helping at a local event, checking in on a neighbor, or being active in different associations — it strengthens trust and makes the whole area feel more supportive. That’s what I love about Dorchester. You see generations of families staying involved, and newcomers stepping in, too. It’s that shared commitment that keeps the community strong and proud.”

Whether she’s supporting first responders through her work, cheering on her kids at the park, or simply enjoying all that Dorchester has to offer, Catherine Guerard is one of the many who help make this neighborhood feel like home.

Here’s to Catherine—and all the locals who keep Dorchester the strong, connected community it is!
