Boston firefighters were at the scene of a five-alarm fire for most of the morning and afternoon in Codman Square in Dorchester on Tuesday.

The BFD responded to 573 Washington St. around 9:15 a.m. to investigate a call for reports of smoke. Nearly five hours later, firefighters continued to pour water and foam onto the building where the Codman Square Market and Mod Liquors are housed.

As of 1:30pm, the fire was still burning on the roof, hampered by the large billboard. The roof eventually collapsed. Fire Commissioner Joe Finn has announced the initial damages estimated to be $1,000,000.00. Fire investigators will not be able to gain access until the water subsides in the basement.
