Enjoy this photo of the legendary Eire Pub where many a politician and celebrity have stopped by for a pint or two. This photo was taken around 1987 by WGBH (shared via Instagram on Dirty Old Boston).
The Eire Pub was originally opened as a traditional “men’s bar” by Tom Stenson in 1964 where hard working men came to unwind and fraternize with other men. Like many bars in Boston of that era, women drinking in tandem with the men was frowned upon. But as the world changed, so did these bars including the Eire Pub. Eventually women could be found inside.
The first female bartender at the Eire was hired in 2018.
