SpeakEasy Stage Company and Front Porch Arts Collective present A STRANGE LOOP by Michael R. Jackson. The blisteringly funny Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning show exposes the heart and soul of a young artist grappling with desires, identity, and instincts that inspire both love and loathing in equal measures. Usher is a Black, queer writer writing a musical about a Black, queer writer writing a musical about a Black, queer writer. Hell-bent on breaking free of his own self-perception, Usher wrestles with the negative self-thoughts in his head to capture and understand his own strange loop, hilariously portrayed onstage by a talented cast.
Dorchester native Kai Clifton performs the lead role of Usher, making his debut with SpeakEasy Stage Company. Clifton began performing at a young age, and performed with Boston Children’s Theatre in 2016, Wheelock Family Theatre, and Boston City Singers. Recent credits include Sofia in The Color Purple (Umbrella Stage) and Ursula in The Little Mermaid (Palace Theatre). Kai is a classically trained singer who trained intensively at the Assisi Performing Arts Program in Italy on a full scholarship. Kai is also a new playwright, and their play QUEENS won the 2022 Broadway World Boston Award for Best New Play or Musical.
