Update: The fridge could use a little love via donations. To volunteer to bring items to fill the fridge – fill out this form here!
Here are some suggestion of items to donate:
Fridges are popping up across the city as part of community initiatives to help feed neighbors and those struggling with food insecurity. Starting with a community fridge in Jamaica Plain, Dorchester now has its own! The motto of the Community Fridge is, “Take what you need, leave what you can;” and residents are welcome to grab whatever food they need or donate the food they have, without judgement.
How does it work?
The fridge will be located across the street from Fields Corner Main Street at 1471 Dorchester Ave in Dorchester. Volunteers check the fridge three times a day to make sure it is stocked with the essentials and that the food inside isn’t expired. Volunteers, which the Dorchester organization is still accepting HERE, plan to pick up and drop off food to the fridge as well. However, anyone is welcome to donate items as long as they are clean, labeled and not expired.
If you’re interested in helping out the DOT Community Fridge but can’t donate food or time, they are accepting monetary donations via cash app: $dotcommunityfridge. Funds will be used to cover the monthly electricity costs for the fridge, cleaning supplies to stay compliant with COVID-19 safety standards, and hopefully more fridges to come.
