Castle of our Skins performing at Conservatory Lab’s 2024 Spring Concert at Jordan Hall
BOSTON – Conservatory Lab Charter School, the only K-8 school in Boston that incorporates daily musical instruction into its curriculum, continues its concert series with Castle of our Skins (COOS), a Black arts institution dedicated to fostering cultural curiosity and celebrating Black artistry through music.
The event will be the second in Conservatory Lab’s Opening Our Doors series that will be free and open to the community and feature performances from Castle of our Skins artists and students from the Conservatory lab El Sistema music program. It is Conservatory Lab’s goal to expand its community outreach in the neighborhoods of Bowdoin / Geneva, Grove Hall, and Upham’s Corner. This upcoming concert represents a step towards sharing beautiful music and artistry of the community with which Conservatory Lab is proud to be a part.
Led by flutist DeShaun Gordon-King and percussionist Steph Davis, this one-hour journey explores soundscapes across time and geography, weaving together influences from the blues, Afro-Latino traditions, African rhythms, and African American improvisation.
Through dynamic storytelling, guided meditation, and rhythmic call-and-response, audiences of all ages will be invited to engage with the music—breaking the fourth wall and becoming part of the experience. This is not just a concert; it’s a shared exploration of sound, culture, and history, designed to uplift, inspire, and connect.

About Conservatory Lab Charter School
At Conservatory Lab Charter School, every single student plays music every single day. Founded in 1999, through the joy and discipline of daily musical engagement, experiential learning, and service to the community, Conservatory Lab students learn to effect changes as creative and active citizens.
Celebrated in 2023 as a School of Recognition by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Conservatory Lab employs a curriculum that encourages students to become leaders of their own learning through hands-on lessons with real world applications, ensemble-based collaboration, and interdisciplinary instruction.
A tuition-free public school, Conservatory Lab draws heavily from some of Boston’s most economically marginalized neighborhoods including Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, and Roxbury.
