Investigation Update: Detectives of the Boston Police Homicide Unit were granted a Murder Warrant out of Dorchester District Court for Gregory Cooper, 40, of Dorchester, for the murder of Shamel Winston that occurred at 11 Erie Street on August 28, 2021. On Wednesday, September 8, 2021, members of the Boston Police Homicide Unit arrested Cooper after he surrendered to police at Boston Police Headquarters.

Original Incident: At about 6:30 PM on Saturday, August 28, 2021, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 11 Erie Street in Dorchester. On arrival, officers located Shamel Winston Atkins, 31, of Dorchester suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Boston Police Department continues to review the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident and is asking anyone with information relative to this investigation to contact Boston Police Homicide Detectives at (617) 343-4470.
