MBTA Announces Red Line Picks Up Speed: Faster Rides for Commuters

Good news for Red Line riders! The MBTA announced that trains can now travel up to 50 mph between North Quincy and JFK/UMass, helping to shorten commutes in both directions.
The latest increase builds on improvements made to the Braintree Branch as part of the MBTA’s 2024 Track Improvement Program. In March 2025, train speeds increased to 50 mph between Braintree and North Quincy.
According to the MBTA, the changes are part of ongoing efforts to improve speed, safety, and reliability across the transit system.
