Dorchester Celebrates Cape Verde’s Historic World Cup Moment

Dorchester was filled with pride this week as Cape Verde made history in its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance.
Hundreds of fans gathered at Town Field in Dorchester on Monday to watch Cape Verde take on Spain on the world’s biggest soccer stage. The match ended in a scoreless draw, but for many in Boston’s Cape Verdean community, the result felt like a victory.
According to WBUR, Massachusetts is home to the largest Cape Verdean population outside of the island nation, and the excitement was on full display throughout Dorchester. Fans draped in blue Cape Verdean flags cheered on the team while celebrating a milestone that many never thought they would see. The atmosphere at Town Field was filled with pride, emotion, and a strong sense of community.
“This is a historic moment,” one supporter told WBUR, reflecting the feelings of many in attendance as Cape Verde competed against one of soccer’s traditional powerhouses.
The City of Boston hosted the free watch party as part of its World Cup neighborhood celebrations, recognizing the deep cultural ties between Dorchester and the Cape Verdean community.
