A new coloring book dedicated to the neighborhood!

Dorchester resident and realtor Leslie MacKinnon created a new coloring book dedicated to her neighborhood of Dorchester!  It features several landmarks and places including The Strand Theater, Malibu Beach, and The Dorchester Day Parade.

We recently had a little Q&A with Leslie about this project:

What inspired you to make a Dorchester coloring book?

I’ve been thinking about it for a while – wanted to do something for the kids in our neighborhood, something that would give them some joy and reflect on all the wonderful areas in Dorchester that they love to visit. My two OFD children, Ava and Oscar, helped me select some of their favorite places and events.

How did you pick the images/landmarks to include?

I tried to included different areas from North to South on the Red Line. The Strand Theater, Malibu Beach,Sleeping Moon statue in front of Ashmont, The Dorchester Day Parade (the best representation of the neighborhood), the antique Mattapan trolley, the new Harvest Bridge over the Neponset River, the Dorchester Bike + Brew Festival ( featuring my daughter Ava on her bike). And also the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival in Fields corner. Surprisingly I’m almost out of my order of 500 copies!  I’m planning to do a reorder soon and will include 4-6 more images in addition to what is already included. I’d love to hear feedback from residents of what they’d like to see included!

Where can people find them?

American Provisions in Ashmont, home.stead bakery & cafe, Dorchester Brewing Company, Ripple Cafe in Ashmont and some other area businesses too! You can always email me if you’d like a copy for yourself!

Any other neighborhoods?

Hmmm… we’ll see! I’d like to round out this version with more images first. Send me your feedback!

Leslie has lived in Dorchester for 15 years with her husband, Brian, and two kids Ava and Oscar. She’s a realtor at COMPASS Boston. Send her an email with your suggestions or if you’d like to request a coloring book!
