Holy Moly, what an upset! City Councilor At-Large Ayanna Pressley won Tuesday’s State Primary elections, upending 10-term U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano in the 7th congressional district.

There is no Republican challenger in November’s general election, so that means Dorchester’s own Pressley is slated to become the first black woman elected to represent Massachusetts in Congress! Woohoo!

So now that Ayanna Pressley is potentially moving on to greener political pastures, that means Althea Garrison could be our new city councilor at-large. Garrison ran for one of the council’s four at-large seats last year and landed in fifth place. Because of a Boston city election rule, Garrison should make her way to the council!  Come re-election we have a feeling that’s gonna be a big field for the four at-large seats!

In other political news, Liz Miranda won the Democratic nomination for state rep. in the Fifth Suffolk district. State Rep. Dan Cullinane squeezed by with a victory to keep his seat in the 12th Suffolk District. And Rachael Rollins crushed her closest rival Greg Henning to be the next Suffolk County DA.

Phew! Oh what a night!
